The thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped organ located at the base of your neck. Thyroid gland is responsible for releasing certain hormones that can control your complete metabolism of your body. Thyroid hormones are known to regulate vital body functions such as:

Thyroid is the main part of your endocrine system that is made up of glands that stores and release hormones in your body. The iron present in the food you consume is taken up by your thyroid gland to prepare two main hormones:

  1. Triiodothyronine (T3)
  2. Thyroxin (T4)

It is important to maintain a normal level of T3 and T4 in your body. The T3 and T4 balance is usually maintained by the hypothalamus and pituitary in your brain.

How to test Thyroid at Home?

Before consulting a doctor, you can check your thyroid at home by making use of a glass of water and a mirror. Take a sip of water and you can notice in the mirror the movement of your thyroid that is going up and down. If you experience any changes in the movement and shape or size of the thyroid gland, you must consult your doctor.

Symptoms of Thyroid Diseases

Thyroid problems generally show visible symptoms in both men and women. TSH levels play an important role in thyroid problems. The common thyroid problem symptoms include:
