Cheek Biting is a common practice among people of all ages. People usually are not conscious while biting their cheek and over time it becomes a bad habit. To recognize cheek biting flip the outer surface of your cheek outwards. Now if you notice a prominent white line running through the middle of the inner surface of the cheek, it means that you have been biting your cheeks unintentionally.

Causes of cheek biting and their Remedies

  • Stress and Anxiety

The most important remedy during such a situation is to reduce your stress and anxiety. This can be done by becoming aware of the situation. Chewing gums might also help to prevent cheek biting

  • Mal aligned Teeth

This happens when the wisdom tooth is increasingly inclined towards the cheek. This condition can be reversed by extracting the wisdom tooth. Orthodontic correction might also help in such a situation.

  • Unconscious Cheek Biting While Sleeping

This is a common phenomenon which affects most of the people. Doctors usually prescribe a plastic rim called a night guard to protect the affected area from further injury.

  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

This is a serious case in which a person continuously bites his/her cheek. Psychological counseling can help in such situations.
