Sore throat is a common problem in children which can be identified by parents easily.  Sore throat shows visible symptoms which helps in early diagnosis. Sore throat is a condition which is marked by throat pain and caused by inflammation due to cold or other virus.

Children suffering with sore throat experience irritation, pain, cough, itchiness and vomiting. Children face difficulty in swallowing food due to pain. Consult the pediatrician when sore throat lasts longer than a week or if it is associated with fever, rash and joint pain. In few cases children face breathing problems. Breathing assistance should be given to avoid complications.

Most of the sore throat are self limiting and can be cured in 2-3 days. Sore throat can be cured by gargling with warm salt water or an antiseptic, throat lozenges and anti-inflammatory medicines. Gargling with antiseptic is advised for children above 5 years of age. To prevent the irritation symptoms the child can take honey and ginger juice. Children below 5 years of age can take warm water for treatment.  If the pain and irritation persists consult the pediatrician. Pediatricians generally prescribe antiseptic and cough syrup to relieve the irritation caused due to sore throat.
