Bone marrow or stem cell transplantation is a procedure that is commonly suggested to treat people with leukemia, some others types of lymphoma. It is also used to treat some hereditary diseases that involve the blood. The common side effects of stem cell transplants are caused by the high dose of chemotherapy. Here are the some of the common acute side effects that one may have
Common Side effects of Bone Marrow Transplantation
• Initially it causes nausea, vomiting, mouth sores and sometimes extreme fatigue because of conditioning with high dose of chemotherapy.
• You can experience diarrhea and some people may have severe infections because of the low blood count. Some of the cells like neutrophils, platelets can extremely go low in their number, so over times the patient need to be supported with blood transplantation.
• Women may experience early menopause, in some cases there can be infertility and many lung infections.
• An estimated of 20 – 30 % individuals who undergo an allogenic stem cell transplantation develops acute or chronic graft versus host disease, which can be treated with immuno suppressant medications.
